7 Symptoms of Diabetes You Shouldn’t Take Lightly

Diabetes could be described as a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood glucose or blood sugar as a result of inadequacy in the production of insulin or inability of the cells to respond to insulin.

It is a long term condition. There are basically two types of diabetes.
The Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes does not produce insulin while the Type 2 Diabetes produces insulin not sufficient for proper functioning of the cells. Type 2 Diabetes is more common than Type 1 Diabetes.  Type 2 Diabetes is a progressive disease and since the cells are insulin resistant, the diabetic patient may resolve to have insulin administered orally. Blood sugar triggers many health problems in the body.

Below are symptoms of diabetes that shouldn’t be taken with levity

Excessive Urination
Excessive urination could be a sign that your blood sugar is too high. High blood sugar also known as Hyperglycemia could result in serious complications such as kidney damage and heart disease. It could be prevented through exercise, strict adherence to meal plans and medications used as prescribed. Checkups should be done regularly as hyperglycemia if untreated could cause diabetic coma.

Swelling
Swelling in the hands, feet and ankles indicate a malfunctioning of the kidney. There are other symptoms associated with kidney malfunction; damage in the kidney can have serious implication as wastes don’t get filtered like they should. It is important to control blood sugar in order to prevent this damage.

Hunger and Fatigue
It should be remembered that in Type 2 Diabetes insulin produced aren’t enough for proper functioning of the cells or the cells are insulin resistant. Food consumed is being converted to glucose for the cells to use and this translates to energy. If the cells resist the insulin, it means the glucose generated from food breakdown cannot get to the cells for the body to use. This leads to fatigue as the body gets tired and worn out easily. Hunger sets in again and there’s the urge to eat.

Dryness of The Mouth
Due to the loss of fluids as a result of frequent or excessive urination, the mouth gets dry and there’s a feeling of thirst. Dehydration often makes the mouth dry. If this occurs regularly, visit the doctor to run some tests.

Blurry Vision
As a result of changing fluids in the body, the lenses in the eyes swell causing them to lose shape and focus. Various eye conditions like Retinopathy (Disease of the retina that causes loss of vision) and cataracts could occur as a result of diabetes not detected on time and untreated.

Slow Healing Sores or Wounds
Diabetes causes a decrease in blood flow. Poor circulation of blood prevents wound from healing. These wounds could turn to sores laced with infections. Prolonged risk of having an infectious wound for long may lead to amputation of the infected part. A wound that festers for too long could be a sign of diabetes.

Numbness in The Feet
Nerve damage results from poor circulation especially in the limbs. Diabetes and complications arising from it could prevent sensations of heat and cold in the leg region. It may be difficult to feel cuts on the feet. If this is noticed medical attention is needed.
